About

From our Taranaki home Cunningham Construction designs, delivers and maintains industry-leading Scaffold, Rigging and Access solutions for our clients across New Zealand’s industrial, commercial and residential sectors. No job is too big and no client too small.

We invest in the best equipment, systems and technology, but our real point of difference is our people. We’re skilled professionals committed to using best practise, achieving superior service and safety standards, and raising the reputation of our industry. Digital technology continues to revolutionise what’s possible, and we keep investing in the tools, systems and thinking that will deliver maximum benefits to our clients.

As a family run business, we can do things differently. Just as motivating as our bottom line, is  helping build a better future. We invest back into our people and our community. We champion more sustainable options to our clients. We are leading by example and have recently achieved TOITŪ Net Carbon Zero certification.

History

Cunningham Construction’s unrivalled reputation as Scaff specialists stretches all the way back to 1970s New Zealand and the Think Big projects that transformed Taranaki into the Energy Province.

It all started when our founder Paul Cunningham Snr, then a merchant seaman, fell in love with Taranaki and jumped ship. Fast-forward to 1976 when Paul (now married to a nice local lass and with a young family) realises the Government and our burgeoning Oil and Gas industry need a reliable partner to help them realise their ambitious plans. He founded Cunningham Construction and became that partner.

Thanks to the team’s hard graft during the 1970s and 1980s Cunningham Construction became synonymous with the Energy sector. The expertise we gained working on nearly every major Oil and Gas and high hazard facility across Aotearoa kept us in hot demand. New clients and projects across multiple industries and sectors followed.

In 1994 Cunningham Construction was a founding member of SARNZ (The Scaffolding, Access and Rigging Association of New Zealand). Paul, who had always advocated strongly for better Health & Safety standards and more professionalism within the industry, became SARNZ’s founding chairperson.

Cunningham continued to grow and diversify, building our expertise and reputation in the Residential and Commercial sectors. In the 1980’s we acquired West Coast Scaffolding, merging their operation with ours to increase capacity and demand grew.

In 2015, as part of a planned succession strategy, Paul handed the company reigns over to his youngest son Paul Jnr. With his dad’s passion in his DNA, our (not so) new CE is committed to continuing Cunningham’s proud legacy  — delivering superior Scaff solutions to Taranaki and beyond for generations to come.
