New Plymouth’s iconic Atkinson building refurbishment – Introducing Ngamotu House.
Cunningham Construction partnered with our major local client Clelands Construction on the recent Atkinson Project. Located in the middle of New Plymouth’s CBD a 75m pedestrian and vehicle Gantry was built utilising Layher’s Protect Panels throughout reducing our carbon footprint for the job. CCL’s Supervisor on this job was Levi Hori an Intermediate scaffolder/Rigger who excelled in the delivery of this project.
A 50m by 22.5m Keder XL roof was installed (Apex at 35m high) with 38.5m Keder sheets allowing us to utilise Keder wall rails on both sides of the building further reducing the need for shrinkwrap. The remainder of the building was fully contained by our experienced shrinkwrap team led by CCL Foreman Blake Lucinsky.
All up the project required 107,853.89 kg of scaffolding as well as 10,022.80 kg in Keder roof components and a Geda 1200 Hoist installed and involved 500 2 plank/3 plank hop ups to navigate the unique building façade.
The safety, quality and environmental achievements on this job were fantastic to see and have built on the strong client relationship with Clelands that exists.
Thanks to Layher, Rodrigo and the Layhtrain team for everyone’s support with this one.
Sustainability
The shrink wrap containment for this scaffold was collected & recycled through @plasbacknz. This means we’ve given the shrinkwrap a second life and ensuring that it’s not just single-use. By working with Plasback, we’re able to collect the plastic and recycle it into new products, extending the life of the material and reducing waste. Plasback’s commitment to sustainability ensures that the plastic collected is recycled both in NZ and offshore. Riverlea Contractors collects the plastic from our yard, bales it, and transports it to recycling facilities to be made into new products. We believe that it’s essential to do our part in protecting the planet, and we’re proud to work with Plasback and Riverlea Contractors to make sure that our shrink wrap doesn’t contribute to waste in landfills or the environment!
"A fully encapsulated scaffold structure was designed by us to cover the Atkinson building while allowing adequate protection for public walking around the building. This meant clever gantry solutions was utilised and secured by ties or counterweights. Our Layher Keder roof XL was the first choice by CCL for the ease of construction and to stay away from shrinkwrap. A GEDA 1200Z/ZP construction hoist was also included in this project.
The drawings given to us by the end customer does not have all the information, but CCL have provided us with exceptional support during the design process. Photos and individual measurements were given to us to ensure that the design will be fit for the project. We were also informed early on about the issues with some neighbours which required careful consideration of placement of legs."
