Cunningham Construction’s Collaboration with Worley and Layher
At Cunningham Construction Ltd, we thrive on overcoming complex challenges with innovative solutions that enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and prioritise safety. Our recent project in 2023 with long-term client Worley to refurbish Tank 101 showcases this commitment.
The Challenge: Balancing Weight and Accessibility
Our task was to design a lightweight, mobile scaffold for accessing both the inside top three metres and the outside two metres below the tank’s wing girder for blasting and painting. The goal was to cut costs, control efficiency, and improve safety by reducing man-hours. Load capacity was a central focus as the design progressed.
Collaborative Solution with Layher
We engaged Layher to design an all-aluminium scaffold. Specialised components not readily available in New Zealand were airfreighted from Germany, ensuring the project stayed on track. This solution balanced the need for lightweight materials with the tank’s load limitations.
Custom Wheels by Steelfab
Mobility was crucial. The scaffold had to be manually moved into position despite the tank’s non-uniform girder. We worked with Steelfab to construct customised wheels that handled the varying gradients effectively, ensuring smooth transitions and contributing to cost and time efficiencies.
Leadership and Expertise
Our Scaffolding & Rigging Supervisor, Danny Smith, a Restricted Intermediate COC holder and Part 2 qualified scaffolder with extensive rigging experience, oversaw the project. His attention to detail and commitment to safety were key to our success.
